A stylish fitted bedroom with traditional features

Interiors photographer, David Giles, has a great eye for design and he certainly had a clear vision when it came to converting his garage into a bedroom with adjoining dress room. Traditional radiators, art nouveau light switches, William Morris fabrics, vintage furniture and Farrow and Ball ‘Cooking Apple’ colour scheme would come together to create a period look and feel in the converted space.

Our brief was to marry the scheme together with fitted furniture that would create ample storage, whilst keeping with the traditional styling. Here David explains how the project to create his ideal bedroom storage exceeded his expectations …

Tell is more about your vision for the space …

It was a garage conversion so a complete change of space and a blank canvas to create some really unique. From the original garage we created a good sized bedroom and an adjacent dressing room. We decided that fitted furniture would make the very best use of the dressing room, giving us the amount of storage that we craved and complete flexibility to design something that was unique to the space. We certainly couldn’t have created so much storage with freestanding units.

With a distinct design concept already created – we knew that we wanted to line the walls of the dressing room with storage and include a dressing table under the window. They key was for the doors and colour palette to work with the scheme – anything too modern would jar against the traditional features.

How did you find the design visit and what final concept did you choose?

The home design visit really helped to bring our vision to life and seeing the CAD cemented our ideas for the space. The designer gave us some great advice on space saving and intelligent storage and we were really happy with the final design. We chose the Shaker Continental style door design to align with the traditional styling in a rich Clover green which perfectly complemented the wall colours. Inside we chose a combination full length rails and drawers. We wanted to keep the finished look and feel of the fitted wardrobes quite sleek and uniform – so on the designers’ recommendation we included internal drawers that were cleverly hidden away behind the cupboard doors.

Whilst the majority of bedroom storage was in the dressing room, we also wanted to utilise space in the bedroom as best that we could. We therefore included a built-in cupboard and drawers in the same design and colour in which we cleverly hid our TV.

As you can see the finished result really is spectacular. The shaker style wardrobes in Clover are a fantastic centrepiece for the traditional design scheme, whilst the finishing touches including the brass handles and hanging rail really elevate the final look and feel of the space. The TV cabinet is a genius addition to the bedroom, hiding it behind a cabinet to avoid compromising the styling.

And the final word goes to David to sum up his My Fitted Bedroom experience …

We are extremely happy. The is design spot on, the finish and fit is perfect, even after a few months of use the doors and drawers are still running perfectly. The wardrobes make the most out of the space, we don’t feel that we need any more storage and the units don’t dominate the smallish room, everything just works. Storage problem solved.

We are very likely to recommend My Fitted Bedroom. The installation was great and hassle free – I would give the fitters five stars! They were experienced and professional, the whole project was completed in two days. Nothing was too much trouble and we were delighted with the final result.

If anyone has a storage problem but little space, fitted bedroom furniture is the way to go. And My Fitted Bedroom are a great company, they fulfilled the brief, are easy to deal with, and they provided a great product. It’s now our favourite room in the house.
