Are Fitted Wardrobes Worth It?

Are Fitted Wardrobes Worth It

Our Head of Design Megan Baker takes on one of the web’s most frequently asked interiors questions. “Are Fitted Wardrobes Worth It?”

Well, at the risk of answering a question with a question, I would first ask what does “worth it” really mean? “Worth it” will mean different things to different people. To some people it is simply a financial question – is it worth spending the money? To others the question may be “Is it worth the inconvenience that may come with a home improvement project?”

It’s our job to make sure it is worth it for each individuals priority, we train our design team to get to the nub of a customers’ motivation when they ask us to offer some interior design advice.

I firmly believe that when we discuss value, it isn’t just a monetary conversation, every customer is different which is why every bedroom or interiors project we take on will be different. Value for money doesn’t mean cheap, it means satisfying a customer’s needs with both a functional and aesthetic solution at a price they are happy is fair.

Over many years I have worked with both free-standing and fitted furniture and have learned that both marketplaces can offer huge differences in prices and quality.

10 years ago I worked with a design studio creating free-standing bedroom armoire’s which looked fabulous but gave less than 1 metre’s hanging at a cost of £3,000 to £5,000. For some people that is value for money and was definitely “worth it” when spending £25,000 on a bedroom renovation!

No matter what your budget may be, the benefits must outweigh the cost, a simplistic way of looking at value for money.

First of all, individually designed fitted bedrooms will put every inch of space to use, most of us have paid a lot for our home so it makes sense to put every square foot to work. Fitted wardrobes allow us to store more (although that isn’t always a good thing) but I believe a more important benefit is that an organised and tidy space just makes people feel better, now you can’t put a price on that but it is of great value.

Admittedly when taking on a fitted furniture project there may be some inconvenience. Free standing furniture may mean a delivery team dropping off a piece of furniture in your bedroom or you spending a few hours on your knees assembling a DIY piece, it may be a quick fix but typically these type of pieces are replaced every few years and come with numerous compromises.

When installing custom designed fitted wardrobes, our team of experts will need space to work, ideally an empty room, which means there may be a little upheaval. In return our furniture then works hard for a customer for decades without maintenance, without further costs and ensuring you stay perfectly organised whilst looking as good as new. Is it “worth it?” I would say so every time.

That’s without considering all the other benefits of professional design to find the best possible solution as well as taking on awkward shaped rooms such as loft rooms, under stairs and small rooms with bulk-heads. Free-standing furniture can only go where it will fit – that isn’t always the best place to put the furniture but if constrained there is little you can do. Whereas fitted furniture will be designed around those obstacles to create the best possible solution for looks and practicality.
