How a Fitted Wardrobe Can Maximise Space in a Small Bedroom

Matt Graphite Push To Open Home Office

When space is somewhat of a luxury, every square inch counts! A well designed fitted wardrobe really comes into its own in small rooms, where it can dramatically improve both storage and sense of space – here’s how…

1. Fitted Wardrobes are Tailored to the Room – They Leave No Awkward Gaps

Standard, freestanding wardrobes rarely fit a space snuggly. In fact, they often leave an awkward gap on one or both sides and don’t fit the ceiling height either. By contrast, fitted wardrobes are made to measure; wall to wall and floor to ceiling. They can even be built around a rooms’ existing features, whether that’s an alcove or a sloping ceiling, transforming what would otherwise be dead space into brilliant storage. At My Fitted Bedroom, we routinely design built in wardrobes that make the most of space, in even small bedroom footprints.

2. Smart Internal Wardrobe Design Creates More Storage and Leaves Less Clutter

The shell of the wardrobe isn’t everything – what’s inside counts! Hanging space for everyday clothes, shelves for folded items, drawers for accessories and clever storage for shoes or luggage are all customisable to you and your habits.

We designed and installed a fitted wardrobe for TV presenter, Laura Hamilton in London, in which we created a walk-in wardrobe featuring drawers, a mirror and even an integrated desk unit.  This project demonstrates how bespoke fitted wardrobes can combine multiple functions into one fitted furniture piece. A one-size-fits-all unit can rarely match all the specific storage needs of a home and as a result, storage boxes creep into a room; under the bed or on top of the wardrobe, allowing clutter to creep in!

3. Fitted Wardrobe Create an Aesthetic Space and Visual Flow with Fewer Interruptions

In small bedrooms, the placing of furniture makes all the difference.  A fitted bedroom wardrobe that’s built flush with a wall or between two walls, helps to maintain clean lines and a sense of openness in the room. Sliding wardrobe doors are incredibly effective where door clearance is tight, therefore helping to improve movement in the room, around a bed or other furniture. Plus, by featuring mirrors or opting for a light, reflective colour, fitted wardrobes can make the room feel larger, as well as cohesive.

4. Awkward Spaces Such as Alcoves or Sloped Ceilings Are Taken Into Account

Small bedrooms often come with quirks – alcoves, radiators, windowsills, sloped ceilings and more. These features can limit how much storage can be squeezed into a room with standard, off the shelf furniture. However, a fitted wardrobe is completely bespoke and roof eaves or odd spaces can be measured and turned into valuable storage.  Our ‘intelligent storage’ approach is aimed at all spaces and our past fitted wardrobe installations demonstrate just how brilliant our solutions can be, despite unusual layouts.

5. Fitted Wardrobes Deliver Better Value Long Term and Improved Resale Appeal

Although fitted wardrobes often have a higher upfront cost than the freestanding alternative, however the benefits in terms of space-saving, custom fit, increased storage and room aesthetic mean value is absolutely being added, both in terms of everyday usability and home resale value. Moreover, when a small bedroom is marketed with built in wardrobes included, it’s not only an asset the buyer gains, but a signal of optimised storage included within the purchase. As said by Laura Hamilton following the installation of her fitted wardrobes by My Fitted Bedroom, “If you are looking for some clever and expertly fitted wardrobe ideas… we love our fitted wardrobes… that have helped turn a house into a home!”.

6. My Fitted Bedroom’s Tips for Making the Most of a Fitted Wardrobe in a Small Room

  • A careful measure – we’ll take care of this for you! Ensuring we have an accurate width, depth, ceiling height, position of skirting / radiators / windows and more.  This will mean that the fitted wardrobe unit will sit flush and utilise the space fully.
  • Pick the right door style – in a small room or bedroom, sliding doors make a huge difference. They avoid needing large clearance for traditional hinged doors and are therefore very effective.
  • Use the full room height – floor to ceiling cabinetry should absolutely be considered and if you’re worried about not being able to reach or make use of the space at the top, we’d recommend using it for seasonal clothing or luggage that’s not required day to day.
  • Plan storage zones inside – assign space for hanging, drawers, open shelves, shoe racks and more. When installing fitted wardrobes, you can avoid the one-size-fits-all model, so make the most of the opportunity!
  • Match to interior style – lighter colours and mirrored doors in particular can make a room reel larger, however we’d always recommend you match the finish of your wardrobes to your interior style, helping it to feel even more integrated.
  • Maintain accessibility to the wardrobe – don’t overstuff it! Make sure you can fully open the doors and access the wardrobes’ features – this is how you’ll truly be able to make the best use of your fitted wardrobes.

In summary, a fitted wardrobe is more than just a piece of furniture in small bedrooms – it’s a space optimising storage solution.  It maximises every available inch of space, customises storage to your lifestyle and delivers a clean, bespoke and custom look that frees up floor space and declutters a room.  At My Fitted Bedroom, we’re able to use tailored wardrobes to turn challenging spaces into beautiful rooms!
