What Do People Most Commonly Regret After a Fitted Wardrobe Installation?

Cassia Angled White Fitted Wardrobes

At My Fitted Bedroom, we always try to recommend fitted wardrobe features that really match their owner’s routine. We think that the best design conversations start with clothes, shoes, bags, laundry and daily habits, well before moving to decisions about door colours and handles.

“I planned for what I owned at the time, not what I might need later”

We know that storage requirements change. Couples combine wardrobes, children grow up, workwear changes and hobbies introduce new equipment that needs to be stored, yet filling every section of a fitted wardrobe with a very specific storage feature can leave no flexibility.

Adjustable shelves and a sensible mix of hanging, drawers and open storage can give a fitted wardrobe more room to adapt. It’s also wise to retain a little spare capacity, as a bespoke wardrobe that’s completely full from installation day has solved today’s clutter, but it definitely hasn’t solved tomorrow’s!

“I chose too much hanging space”

Many people automatically request as much hanging as possible, because it’s an obvious choice for inside a wardrobe, but they then discover that drawers and shelves would have been more useful for them. Whilst others create double hanging everywhere and have nowhere for dresses, coats or longer garments which fast becomes a problem. Before ordering bespoke wardrobes, look at the types of clothes you actually own. Measure the approximate width of long hanging, short hanging and folded items. Consider how many shoes, handbags, watches and jewellery you have too; this should be an intentional exercise rather than be treated as an afterthought, however this does not need to be exact to the centimetre, it simply gives our My Fitted Bedroom designer some insight about your habits.

“The doors affect the space”

Hinged doors need clear space to open. Bedside tables, pendant lights, radiators, window reveals and the corner of the bed can all interrupt that movement. So, where the walkway is narrow, sliding wardrobes can remove the swing issue. Hinged doors may still be better when full access to the interior is the priority. The right decision comes from drawing the furniture and circulation together, rather than choosing a door type in isolation.

“I did not think about where everyday items would go”

The most accessible part of a wardrobe should hold the things used most often. It quickly becomes frustrating to crouch for daily clothes, whilst occasional items occupy eye level or find suitcases at the front, when your socks are at the back! In a shared fitted bedroom, each person should have a clearly considered zone. Equal width is not always equal usefulness: one partner may need long hanging and shoe storage, while the other needs drawers and double hanging. A bespoke interior should really reflect those differences.

It’s even worth deciding where ‘worn-but-not-ready-to-wash’ clothes, laundry, spare bedding, luggage and ironing equipment will live? These ordinary categories determine whether the room remains tidy after the initial installation, which is an incredibly important factor!

“I chose the finish from a small sample in different light”

The colour of your fitted wardrobes changes with daylight, flooring and bulb temperature; a grey can appear blue in a cool north-facing bedroom, whereas white can look stark beside a warm carpet and black can feel either dramatic or flat, depending on the door detail and surrounding materials. At My Fitted Bedroom, we offer a free home design appointment where you can view samples and swatches around your room, because light falls differently on a door than on a sample laid flat in a showroom or a photo of a sample found online. You’ll be able to move around your room, considering the fitted wardrobe colour alongside your real flooring and fabrics.

“I wish I had added lighting or a mirror”

Internal lighting is definitely easier to plan at the design stage than after installation, particularly where electrical work or cable routes are involved. The same is true of sockets, televisions and illuminated dressing areas. A mirror can make dressing easier and reflect light, but a huge mirrored surface is not right for everyone. Decide whether you want a full-length view, a dressing-table mirror or selected mirrored doors? But remember, more mirror is not automatically more useful!

Our Designer’s Verdict

The biggest regret we find our customers make is treating their fitted furniture as a row of cupboards, rather than a system they’ll use day in and day out. The outside should suit the room, but the inside must suit you as the individual. Before booking a free home design visit with My Fitted Bedroom, think about your current wardrobe and consider what never stays tidy and identify the items that are hardest to store. A good fitted wardrobe designer can then turn those problems into zones, dimensions and features! At My Fitted Bedroom, our intelligent storage options can provide solutions for your real habits; we don’t just design things to simply fill a catalogue. Enquire now to discuss the features of a fitted wardrobe that could make a real difference in your home.
