Soulful Sage: How to bring Dulux’s Colour of the Year 2027 into your bedroom
Soft, soothing and surprisingly versatile, sage green has been steadily making its way into our homes – and in 2027 it’s set to take centre stage.
Dulux has named Soulful Sage™ its Colour of the Year for 2027, putting this gentle, mood-boosting green firmly in the interiors spotlight.
For bedrooms in particular, it makes perfect sense. Sitting somewhere between a colour and a neutral, sage has enough personality to make a room feel considered, while remaining soft enough for a space designed around rest and relaxation.
And you don’t have to repaint the entire bedroom to embrace it. From sage green fitted wardrobes to bedding, artwork and carefully chosen accents, there are plenty of ways to bring the colour into your bedroom – and make it work well beyond 2027.
Why sage green works so well in a bedroom
“Part of the appeal of sage is that it gives you colour without demanding too much attention,” explains Megan Baker, Head of Design at My Fitted Bedroom.
“It has the calming quality we naturally associate with greens, but its muted undertones mean it can work almost like a neutral. That makes it particularly good for bedrooms, where you generally want the overall scheme to feel restful rather than overstimulating.”
Sage also works particularly well on larger pieces of furniture.
“A full wall of fitted wardrobes is often one of the biggest visual elements in a bedroom, so it’s understandable that people can be nervous about choosing anything other than white, cream or grey. Sage is a really good halfway house. It makes the furniture part of the design rather than something you’re trying to disguise, without overpowering the room.”
Make your fitted wardrobes the starting point
Rather than decorating the bedroom and choosing furniture afterwards, try reversing the process.
A wall of green fitted wardrobes can become the anchor for the entire colour scheme, with the walls, flooring, soft furnishings and accessories chosen to complement them.

Don’t try to match every shade of green
One of the easiest ways to make sage feel dated is to make everything match.
Instead, think in terms of a family of greens. Soulful Sage can sit alongside reed, fjord, olive, moss and deeper grey-green tones without every element being identical.
Megan explains: “Rooms generally feel more sophisticated when there’s some variation. Your wardrobes don’t need to exactly match the green in a cushion, artwork or plant pot. In fact, those slight differences are what stop the room feeling overly coordinated.
“Pick your main green first – perhaps your fitted furniture – and then build around it with two or three related tones.”
Try sage with pink for a less predictable combination
Cream, beige and natural wood are obvious partners for sage – and they work beautifully – but they aren’t the only option.
“One combination I think we’ll see much more of is sage and pink,” says Megan. “Think dusty pink, plaster, blush, clay and muted rose rather than sugary pinks.
“These warmer colours bring out a completely different side of sage. They stop the room becoming overly botanical and can make green fitted furniture feel surprisingly sophisticated.”
You don’t need much. Try a plaster-pink wall behind green wardrobes, blush bed linen or a single upholstered chair in a dusty rose fabric.
Add warm wood to soften the scheme
Green and wood are natural partners, but the type of timber makes a difference.
For a warm, restful bedroom, look at oak, walnut and mid-toned woods rather than very cool grey finishes. Wood flooring, bedside tables, a wooden headboard or even a simple timber picture frame can provide enough contrast.

Consider how the colour changes throughout the day. Natural and artificial light can significantly affect how muted greens appear. A north-facing bedroom may make a grey-green feel cooler, while warm afternoon light can bring out its softer, earthier undertones.
“Whenever you’re committing to colour on something as significant as fitted wardrobes, look at a physical sample in the actual room,” advises Megan. “Look at it next to your walls, flooring and fabrics and check it at different times of the day. The aim isn’t to make everything match perfectly; it’s to make sure the undertones sit comfortably together.”

Give sage a more luxurious edge
There is a danger of automatically taking sage down the rustic, cottage-inspired route. If that’s not your style, introduce finishes that deliberately contrast with its earthiness.
“Brushed brass is fantastic with sage green,” says Megan. “It immediately elevates it. Black hardware creates a sharper contemporary look, while mirrors, glass and statement lighting can stop a green bedroom feeling too ‘country’.”
This works particularly well with the fluted detailing of Deco fitted wardrobes. The Art Deco-inspired design gives the soft green a stronger, more luxurious personality.
