Fitted Wardrobe Storage Hacks: Clever Ways to Store Your Clothes

When it comes to creating a clear, calm and clutter free bedroom, the secret lies in the storage and nothing beats a fitted wardrobe when it comes to combining style, with function and organisation. Unlike ‘off the shelf’ wardrobes, fitted wardrobes are specifically tailored to suit you, your space, your belongings and your lifestyle; allowing you to stay organised in a way that looks beautiful too!
Our team at My Fitted Bedroom have come up with their favourite fitted wardrobe storage hacks, combined with some real customer examples that show what a difference a bespoke fitted wardrobe design can make to your life and home…
1. Zone the Storage in a Fitted Wardrobe by Item and Usage
Every one of your items deserves its own home and with a fitted wardrobe, you can design internal zones that suit your needs perfectly:
- Long Hanging – do you have a number of maxi dresses? Perhaps its longer coats that you have a collection of? In this case, be sure to opt for long hanging rails to house these items – long hanging rails often go forgotten.
- Short Hanging – if jackets and trousers make up a big part of your wardrobe, short hanging will be imperative to ensure your clothing is stored crease free, so carefully consider how much short hanging space you might need.
- Accessory Drawers – many of our customers have jewellery, sunglasses, belts, ties and more, that they simply have no home for, that’s why we always recommend incorporating a drawer (or more!) for your accessories.
- High Shelving – to make the most of the space in a room, floor to ceiling wardrobes are a must. The highest space is great in the wardrobe isn’t wasted – it’s great to use for seasonal clothing or luggage, for example – things that need storing, but you don’t need to access every day.
As part of our collaboration with TV presenter Laura Hamilton, each family member had tailored space within the wardrobe, meaning they each had streamlined storage for their belongings that was easy to navigate – this is a perfect example of intelligent fitted storage solutions in action.
2. Include Flexible Shelving and Hanging Storage
As your lifestyle changes, your shoe collection expands, or your dress collection grows, your storage needs also change, that’s why a well-planned fitted wardrobe should include:
- Adjustable Shelves – by being able to alter the height, you can switch a shelf from being a home for folded jumpers, to one for tall boots.
- Double Hanging Rails – perfect for shirts, blouses or jackets, double hanging rails are particularly effective in compact spaces.
We partnered with Interior Stylist, Sophia Ferrari-Willis, who opted for our Elise range of fitted wardrobes in soft pink, to create a ‘pastel paradise’. Within it, she combined shelving with hanging space, giving her room to store her clothes and display her handbags, with the flexibility to move the positioning of the interior features, if or when her storage requirements changed.
3. Incorporate Lighting, Mirrors or Sliding Doors to Increase Usability
Features like lighting, mirrors and door styles can make a huge difference into how your wardrobe looks, but more importantly, your ability to use your wardrobe and see what’s inside it…
- Add LED or motion sensor lighting to light up the interior of the wardrobe when you’re using it.
- Fit sliding doors on the wardrobe, particularly in smaller bedrooms – this helps to save space as clearance for traditional hinged doors is not needed.
- Include a full length mirror, for quick outfit checks. Plus, it frees up the space where you might have otherwise had a mirror elsewhere in the room.
In one of our alcove wardrobe makeovers, integrated lighting transformed a dark corner into functional and stylish storage – we have completed many, many installations where these small features make a huge impact.
4. Make an Effort to Keep Your Wardrobe Organised
Your fitted wardrobe has been specifically designed to work hard, for you! However, there are small things you can do regularly to make sure you’re getting the most out of it:
- Declutter often and donate items that you no longer wear or no longer fit.
- Use drawer dividers for small items, so that you can separate different belongings easily.
- Group clothes by colour or by type – perhaps keep all t-shirts together and all jumpers together; or maybe keep summer clothes separate to winter ones.
- Allow yourself one ‘overflow’ drawer – a drawer that houses those things you don’t often wear, but once it’s full, some things have got to go!
5. Combine Style & Function Together in a Fitted Wardrobe
A fitted wardrobe is part of a room’s design – it’s not just storage. It’s important to choose finishes and details that reflect your style too…
- Mirrored our gloss doors are contemporary and modern, plus they reflect light, helping to make rooms feel open and larger.
- Coordinate handles with other finishes or features on the wardrobe or in the room, to give a cohesive look.
- Choose colours that suit your personality and interior style choices, whether that’s bold, statement colours or timeless neutrals.
We designed and installed a fitted wardrobe for Sophia Ferrari-Willis – her wardrobe shows how a custom colour, combined with clever configuration can make storage the absolute centrepiece of a room!
