Overbed Storage or Underbed Storage for your Fitted Bedroom

Overbed storage uses the space above the headboard, whilst underbed storage uses the space beneath the mattress or bed frame. The better choice depends on what you need to put away, how often you need it and how the bed sits within the room. In some fitted bedrooms, both can have a useful role. Before adding either, look at the belongings that currently have nowhere convenient to go. Storage for spare bedding needs a different arrangement from storage for shoes you wear every morning.
Start With the Items Rather than the Empty Space
A cupboard above the bed can look like an easy answer to a full bedroom, but it’s helpful only if its contents are suitable for that position and you can reach them comfortably. Likewise, a large space beneath the bed may be awkward for smaller everyday items, if you have to move bedding or other furniture to access them easily.
Separate what you use frequently from what you need occasionally. Then discuss how the dimensions, weight and access requirements of those belongings relate to the proposed storage. Heavy or frequently used items may be better placed in a more accessible cupboard or drawer elsewhere, for example.
When Overbed Storage can be Useful
Overbed cupboards may suit a room where there’s limited space for additional furniture on other walls. They can form part of a coordinated arrangement, with fitted wardrobes beside the bed and integrated bedside storage. The amount of useful storage depends on the ceiling height, cupboard dimensions and the opening left around the headboard. The design should still feel comfortable when you sit up in bed, make it or move around it. Our overbed and bridge wardrobe guide explores how these arrangements can look. Here, the main question is whether overhead cupboards offer the right access for what you want to store.
Check the Practicalities of Underbed Storage
If you already own a storage bed, include its opening mechanism in the fitted bedroom plan. Side drawers need room to pull out; drawers at the foot need clearance beyond the bed frame. A lift-up bed has a different access pattern, so it’s important to consider how you’ll operate it in the proposed room and whether nearby fitted furniture could obstruct it – follow the bed manufacturer’s instructions for use and loading.
If you use loose boxes beneath an ordinary bed, measure the clear height and the route used to remove them. A box that slides under easily may be difficult to retrieve once new bedside furniture is in place.
Compare Access Before Comparing Capacity
It’s tempting to choose whichever option creates the most cupboard or drawer space. Ease of use deserves equal attention.
| Everyday Question | Overbed Cupboards | Underbed Storage |
| How do I reach it | Depends on cupboard height and a suitable means of access | Depends on bending, drawer access or the bed mechanism |
| What space is needed | Clearance around the headboard and cupboard doors | Clearance for boxes, drawers or the lifting mechanism |
| What changes the design | Ceiling height, bed position and wall construction | Bed frame, floor space and nearby furniture |
Try to picture using the storage when the bedroom is fully furnished. If access would be a struggle, an alternative position may be more useful even if it holds a little less.
Consider the Effect on the Bedroom
Overbed furniture makes the bed wall a more prominent feature. Some people enjoy that coordinated appearance; others prefer to keep the space above the headboard open. Underbed storage can leave the wall clear, but it may influence your choice of bed and the routes beside it. Neither automatically makes the bedroom feel larger. When planning fitted bedroom furniture, look at both the storage gained and the open space you would like to retain.
Agree the Installation and Bed Details
Overhead cupboards need a design and installation suited to their position and the wall construction. Discuss the proposed arrangement with the furniture team, including loading guidance and how it will be supported. Confirm the bed frame, mattress height and headboard before signing off the fitted design. A later change to a taller mattress or wider bed can alter clearances that originally worked well.
