5 designer tips for a Spring Bedroom Refresh

Every spring, the same advice comes around: choose lighter colours, add fresh bedding, and do quick declutter (or Spring Clean).

But for many bedrooms, nothing really changes. They can still feel heavy. Still feel small. Still don’t reflect the light the way they should. The issue isn’t a lack of effort, it’s that most updates focus on what you add, rather than what you remove.

According to My Fitted Bedroom designer Mia Poulton, the biggest difference comes from reducing visual weight, not just introducing lighter tones.

“The quickest way to make a bedroom feel brighter isn’t adding more – it’s taking away anything that absorbs light or breaks up the space visually.

“Light, airy, Spring-like bedrooms aren’t created through decoration alone. They come from simplifying the space, reducing visual breaks, and allowing light to move freely.”

Here are Mia’s five tips on how to actually create a lighter, more open bedroom this spring,  in a way that works long-term.

Stop thinking colour-first … start with light flow

“Spring interiors are all about light, space, and renewal”, says Mia. “Most people begin with paint charts. But colour only works if light can move freely around the room.

“Two common mistakes are: large bulky furniture blocking natural light paths and dark finishes placed opposite windows, absorbing brightness.

“What works better is to position wardrobes and furniture to allow light to travel across surfaces and choosing finishes that reflect, rather than trap light.”

“A light room isn’t just about pale colours, it’s about how surfaces interact with daylight. Elle Fitted Wardrobes in Super Matt Cashmere reflect natural daylight without the ‘shine’ to give a fresh spring like feel in the bedroom.

“A well-designed bedroom should work with natural light, not against it,” she notes. “The more light you allow in, the more bright and spacious the room will feel.”

Reduce visual clutter (even if the room is tidy)

“A room can be clean and light, but still feel chaotic. That’s because the eye is constantly interrupted by things like gaps between furniture, mismatched pieces and items sitting on top of wardrobes or units.

Fitted furniture is a fantastic fix:

  • Use full-height fitted furniture to eliminate dead space
  • Keep lines clean and continuous
  • Hide everyday items behind closed doors with built in storage

The result is visual calm, advises Mia.

Rethink storage – it’s the biggest blocker for a light and airy room

“Clutter instantly makes a room feel smaller and heavier,” Mia explains. “So does freestanding storage in some cases, creating shadowed areas and gaps.

“Made-to-measure fitted furniture solves this allowing you to simplify the space, so it feels lighter and more intentional. You can use the full height of the room, create a seamless look and maximise space in small bedrooms.

“Add smart storage solutions to create a tidy, organised bedroom that instantly feels more relaxing – exactly what spring interiors are all about.”

Layer texture – but keep it tonal

“Spring interiors are all about layering, but for a curated not chaotic look keep it tonal. If you want your bedroom to feel breathable and comfortable focus on linen, soft cotton cotton, textured woven cushions, and natural fibre rugs.

“Texture is still important in spring interiors,” Mia says. “But my advice is to use texture to add interest without adding visual weight. Subtle variations within the same colour family look great, like we’ve done here with our Luna wardrobes in blush.”

Don’t just bring the outdoors in – faux plants work just as well

“Spring is synonymous with new life, making it the perfect time to reconnect your interiors with nature. But, if like many of us, you tend to under or over water plants meaning they never quite give you the ‘fresh blooms’ look you wanted then faux flowers, faux plants and foliage works just as well.

“Pair with a spring colour palette, natural materials and organic shapes for a spring decor you’ll want to share on Instagram! It’s these little touches that add warmth and life while keeping the overall look fresh and balanced.

“Natural materials soften the space and make it feel more relaxed,” Mia adds. “They’re a simple way to bring that spring feeling indoors.”
