Should Fitted Wardrobes Go to the Ceiling?

Gabriella Loft Room Fitted Wardrobes

Our production facility allows us to offer 16 door heights which are only restricted due to the physical constraints of raw materials.  If a customer has a specific requirement to fall short of the ceiling then we can do that but our advice will almost always be GO BIG!

Our firm belief is that this question is usually asked of our design team after a customer has spoken with an off-the-shelf bedroom company that only offers 1 or 2 door heights, after all why wouldn’t you make best use of all the space you have in your room?

The design of our furniture means our highly skilled installers can scribe around delicate cornice and coving or even exposed beams in period properties with their twists and characterful features!  In doing this we often surprise customers as to how we can find storage space in the most unlikely situations.  A quick look on Instagram at the myriad of influential cleaning channels will show that banishing dust traps is always popular, so that unusable space above a wardrobe will over time become a haven for dust and webs et al.  Where we work with extremely high ceilings such as 3m and higher we then incorporate our Ceiling-height storage system.

Ceiling-height storage refers to fitted cupboards that extend all the way to the top of your room, using every inch of vertical space above your main wardrobe doors. Sometimes called top boxes, these upper units are perfect for storing less frequently used items like out-of-season clothing, suitcases or spare bedding. By running your furniture right up to the ceiling, you get a sleek, built-in look with no awkward dust traps or wasted space — just smart, seamless storage that works as hard as it looks good. Whether your ceilings are standard height or more generous, ceiling-height storage helps you get more from your room without taking up more floor space.

Ok, so everything  sounds great so far but there must be some downside?  Well the only one we can think of (and we had to work hard) is you may need to access the super height storage areas with a stool or step-ladder, but that would be the same if you were storing on top of wardrobes – it would just look less tidy!

Back to the reasons to say yes to ceiling heights. We find loft rooms with slopes offer little “on-top” storage as the ceiling access reduces into the slope so the dust trap becomes harder to access and there are fewer storage opportunities – we think it best to fit to the ceiling in sloped and loft rooms. Ultimately we let a customer decide which they prefer, but as we are in the enviable position to cover most ceiling heights we will always recommend the best use of space, which will give the best value for money, be more practical and look simply look better. You can see lots of examples of our fitted wardrobes here
